Before the interview:
1. Research
- Ensure to research the company you are applying for to show interest and reference what you learned to show that you care.
- Review the company website, social media pages, and all the information that can help you to understand the company culture better.
2. Review the job description and prepare
- This will help you understand what the company is looking for.
- Review your resume and do a brainstorm to match the skills and experiences that make you the best fit for the position you are applying for. This will help you identify your strengths and weaknesses.
- Identify your strengths and skills and show why you are the ideal person for the position with those the company is looking for in a candidate.
- Show your coding skills by sending the recruiter some of your projects in your GitHub account.
3. Practice some basic interview questions, ideally in English
- Try to keep the answers simple. Some ideas can be: practice with a friend or in a mirror. Listen to podcasts, tv shows, etc., to hear different types of accents to improve your listening skills.
During the interview:
4. You only get one first impression!
- Try your best to look professional, and it does not matter if it’s a virtual or face-to-face interview. Even Though we work in a very relaxed environment, please find out the dress code that better fits the culture in the company to match it with your outfit.
- If the interview is virtual, create the right environment. Please take it in a quiet space with good lighting and connect from a computer with a good internet signal for the video call. Use the camera and try not to use any disruptive backgrounds and instead, move your laptop to a white wall, or have a simple background. It will help the recruiter focus on yourself instead of having other distractions in the video call. Please get familiar with the webcam and microphone and understand how they work before the interview.
- The audio and video must come through clearly and set your camera at your eye level. If you have a friend or family member who can assist in doing a trial run, this will help prevent potential equipment issues.
5. Listening is the key!
- Try not to interrupt the interviewer when talking.
- Answer all the questions honestly.
- While it may be tempting to exaggerate your qualifications and achievements, interviewers find honesty admirable.
- Keep your answers brief and straightforward. Try to use the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) Method with an example of an actual situation you lived in one of your previous jobs. This is the perfect way to show the recruiter all the challenges you faced, how you overcame them, and your achieved results.
- It is ok not to know everything, tell the truth, and focus on learning. We work in a world where everything changes rapidly. Constant learning is an essential part of your job.
6. Show Positive Body language and be Authentic!
- Project positive energy. Remember, the more you practice, the more confident you feel. Maintain eye contact all the time (even if it’s virtual). Verbal clues are essential to project an attitude of energy, passion, and interest during the whole interview.
- We want to know who you are! Being yourself is very important! Let your personality shine!
- Try to keep things positive. Remember to never bad-mouth your previous employer. If the separation was not smooth, try to focus on the positive aspects.
7. Be prepared with questions
- Ask all the questions you have at the end of the interview. Demonstrate your interest in the position.
- You can also take some notes during the interview and ask them to find out more about the position, company, expectations, and company culture. Let the interviewer know that you did your homework and are interested in the job you are applying for.
8. Keep it professional, and be respectful of time
- Finally, respect the interview time.
- If you have a conflict before the call, always let the recruiter/client know, so they are informed, and if necessary, reschedule the meeting.
- Be on time and be careful when answering the questions since your time with each questionnaire is restricted. We know how hectic our days can look like. That is why we know how valued and precious time can be for both of us.
- The interviews are not short, and the process could be a bit long. Try to take the time out of your day to take the entire interview and wait patiently for the company’s response.
After the interview:
9. Thank your interviewer
- It’s always nice to send over a quick thank you note to your interviewer, reminding them what you’re so excited about in the position, and why you’re a great fit. If you don’t have the email for the interviewer, send the thank you note to your recruiter, who will forward it to the interviewer
10. Be professional regardless of the outcome
- Finally, even if the interview does not result in a job offer, be courteous and professional about the outcome. It truly is a small world, and you don’t know when you might cross paths again!
We all know that facing the selection interview process is complex, and nerves can most of the time betray us. But that is the reason why you should prepare for it to be relaxed. Always try to think about an interview – not as a test, but as a way to determine if there is a good match between your skills, and what the company is looking for!
