Meet: Alejandro Castillo

- Tell us a little about yourself: I’m Alejandro, a Software Engineer from Costa Rica. I enjoy almost any outdoor or nature-related activity, especially those in the mountains. I also like weightlifting, riding my motorcycle, and spending time with my family.
- What initially attracted you to engineering and how have you found inspiration in this career? Since I was a kid, I’ve enjoyed building things. Back in college, I became very interested in how certain technologies work. That curiosity—combined with my love for solving complex problems and the ability to build solutions and applications—led me to dive deeper into software engineering. There’s always something new to learn, which keeps it exciting. Plus, having the opportunity to collaborate in industries that make a positive impact on people’s lives is a big part of what inspires me.
- What innovation or technical advancement have you been a part of that you consider to have made a milestone in your engineering field? I consider it a milestone to be part of a healthcare organization with highly skilled and knowledgeable teammates. Learning new technologies and better ways to build applications in such a collaborative environment—while also gaining a deeper understanding of the clinical domain—is incredibly fulfilling. It allows me to contribute to improving the care experience for both patients and healthcare providers.
- What made you choose Mismo? Mismo genuinely puts effort into creating a pleasant and dynamic work environment with many benefits. On top of that, it’s a real pleasure to work with such great teammates.
- How would you describe the work environment at Mismo? It’s a very inclusive, supportive, and respectful environment. We enjoy plenty of fun activities that help us stay connected, and there’s always a highly responsive team ready to help at any time.
- What learning and development opportunities have you had at Mismo and how have you utilized these opportunities to grow as a professional? Having access to learning platforms allows us to stay up to date with new technologies and skills, so we can effectively leverage them in our work.
- What aspects of working at Mismo’s engineering team make you proud and motivate you in your daily tasks? Being part of a highly skilled and responsive support team that consistently shows empathy and respect is incredibly valuable.
- How do you believe the company and engineering can positively impact the world, people’s lives, and make a difference in their respective industries? We strive for high quality in everything we do. It’s essential to always listen to and consider the perspectives of the people we’re building solutions for. Additionally, we implement sustainability practices to ensure a balanced impact across different areas of our environment.
- What Mismo policies or practices have helped you improve your work-life balance? Working remotely is the biggest benefit, as it offers flexibility and a better work-life balance from the comfort of my home. The flexible PTO and support from the HR team are also excellent.
- What inspiring advice would you give to someone considering a career in engineering or looking to join a company like Mismo? Choose engineering! Always stay open to new perspectives, new ways of doing things, and exciting technologies. Engineering isn’t about knowing everything — it’s about being relentlessly curious.
It means showing up with the mindset that every bug is an opportunity to learn, every teammate is someone you can grow with, and every line of code is a small building block in something greater than yourself.
