I’m Rafael Mora, a Senior Software Engineer and Engineering Manager at Mismo. With 16 years of experience in software engineering, my career has been a constant learning and growth journey. I’ve worked across various industries, including banking, e-commerce, and healthcare, contributing to my diverse skill set. Over the years, I’ve gained expertise in numerous technologies and programming languages, such as Java, C#, Python, Node.js, React.js, React Native, and AngularJS, to name a few. My experience extends to working with databases like Sql Server, Oracle DB, PostgreSQL, Firebase, and cloud services such as AWS. This broad exposure has equipped me with the tools to tackle various challenges and innovate in my field.
- What initially attracted you to engineering and how have you found inspiration in this career?
My initial interest in engineering was sparked by my love for video games; I thought the field would be similar to this interest. However, as I progressed in my studies, I realized the significant impact that technology could have on solving real problems. This realization shifted my perspective, motivating me to explore how to contribute positively through my work. Throughout my career, I have worked with healthcare companies serving various groups, including children, adults, and individuals facing mental health issues. The understanding that even a small contribution from me could benefit millions of people worldwide has been advantageous. This journey has expanded my view of what engineering can achieve and strengthened my desire to use technology for the benefit of others. It’s a powerful reminder that the work we do in tech can have widespread effects, improving lives and communities.
- What innovation or technical advancement have you been a part of that you consider to have made a milestone in your engineering field?
One of the most significant contributions I’ve made within the engineering field is developing technology solutions for healthcare. Working with companies focusing on health care for different age groups and mental health has allowed me to be part of innovative projects that truly make a difference. For example, I’ve participated in creating software that improves patient care and streamlines healthcare services for children and adults alike. These projects have advanced the integration of technology in medicine and shown me the direct impact of engineering on improving people’s lives. Being part of these advancements, especially in a field as crucial as healthcare, has been a milestone in my career. It underscores the potential of engineering to solve real-world problems and improve millions of lives worldwide, aligning with my vision of technology as a tool for good.

At Mismo, I’ve had great chances to learn and grow. They helped me get a Scrum certification, which taught me a lot about organizing projects better. This has made a big difference in my work.
I also moved up from being a team lead to an engineering lead. This move was a big deal because I could take on more responsibility and help guide our projects more. Mismo gave me the support and chances I needed to make this happen.
In short, Mismo has helped me become better at my job by offering lots of learning opportunities and chances to move up.

Working with Mismo’s engineering team makes me proud and motivated daily for several reasons. First, the people here are amazing. Everyone is supportive and intelligent, which makes working together a great experience. Then, there are the opportunities Mismo gives us to grow and learn, which means I’m constantly improving and facing new challenges. Finally, the projects we work on are exciting and vital. We get to solve real problems and make a difference, which feels rewarding.

Working on a mental health project has shown me how our expertise can directly help people by providing better tools and services for mental health care.
