Data Lifecycle in Elasticsearch

Introduction: Understanding Data Management in Elasticsearch

When using Elasticsearch, we inevitably encounter large volumes of data that require an effective management strategy. This is crucial for maintaining optimal performance, scalability, and system optimization. To address this challenge, Elasticsearch introduces the lifecycle management concept through data tiers. These tiers dictate where the data is stored and the hardware resources utilized, influencing deployment costs.

Understanding the Data Lifecycle

The data lifecycle encompasses the stages through which data progresses based on age or access requirements. Data is allocated to hardware with varying “temperatures” levels: Hot, Warm, Cold, and Frozen. Each level entails distinct characteristics and storage considerations.

Data Tiers and Their Significance

Hot Tier

  • They are designed for frequently queried and written data, such as customer-facing search use cases or real-time logging.
  • Utilizes high-performance storage, such as SSDs, to enhance read/write speeds.
  • Recommended storage/memory ratio of 1:30

Warm Tier

  • Suitable for less frequently accessed data still used regularly, such as for historical analysis or reporting purposes.
  • The recommended storage/memory ratio is 1:160 (ES’ES’s ratio on Elastic Cloud).
  • Examples include older logs and user activity data.

Coldier

  • It is reserved for data that is rarely accessed and updated, intended for long-term retention.
  • Focuses on optimizing storage and access costs for old data.
  • Examples include data retention for compliance purposes and archived logs.

Frozen Tier

  • Dedicated to read-only data that cannot be modified.
  • Optimized for cost savings on data storage

Index Lifecycle Management (ILM)

ILM is an Elasticsearch feature designed to manage the data lifecycle effectively. It enables users to create policies that automate the process of transitioning data from one tier to the next.

Defined as a series of steps triggered by various criteria such as index age or size, ILM facilitates actions beyond data allocation to different nodes corresponding to the data tier. These actions may include rolling over, deleting, or freezing indices.
ILM ensures consistent data management according to the predefined policies, thereby enhancing deployment stability, performance, and cost optimization.

Best Practices and Considerations

When designing an application it’s essential to consider data lifecycle management as a fundamental aspect of deployment sizing. To kickstart this process, asking the following questions can be invaluable:

  • How much data are we indexing per day?
  • For how many days will this data be needed?
  • What is the rate of indexing(documents per second)?
  • What is the rate of querying (queries per second)?

Additionally, another crucial concept related to data management is snapshots. This provides an alternative option for long-term data storage outside of Elasticsearch. Elastic supports sending snapshots to cloud platforms like AWS (S3), Azure, or GCP. Alternatively, creating an S3-like repository with MinIO on-premises, for example, is another viable option.

Conclusion

Effective data management is integral to Elasticsearch and should be carefully planned during deployment design. Data tiers play a crucial role in this process, determining the hardware used on the respective Elasticsearch nodes. Facilitating the movement of data between tiers, Index Lifecycle Management (ILM) employs policies to dictate when an index transitions tiers or is deleted.

Furthermore, snapshots emerge as another essential tool for Elasticsearch data management. They enable data storage across various cloud services, potentially reducing the need for additional Elasticsearch nodes. This underscores the importance of comprehensive data management strategies for optimizing Elasticsearch deployments.

Introduction to Elasticsearch

Elasticsearch stands as a powerful search engine enriched with analytical capabilities, all rooted in Lucene. This versatile platform seamlessly integrates three key solutions: Observability, Security, and Enterprise Search. Moreover, it offers the flexibility for users to craft ad hoc applications leveraging its robust search, machine learning, and analytics functionalities. Whether deployed on-premises or through the convenient  Elastic Cloud service in the cloud, Elasticsearch empowers businesses with unparalleled search capabilities and data insights.

Key Features of Elasticsearch:

  • Full Text Search: Elasticsearch offers robust full-text search capabilities, including customizable analyzers tailored to suit specific use cases.
  • Distributed Architecture and Scalability: Its distributed architecture allows Elasticsearch to scale horizontally, facilitating efficient data management and lifecycle processes. This scalability ensures high availability, making data resilient to major outages.
  • Fast Response Times: Elasticsearch boosts impressively fast response times, making it ideal for customer-facing search applications. This attribute has led to its widespread adoption by online retailers worldwide.
  • Machine Learning Capabilities: Elasticsearch features dedicated machine learning nodes, providing access to pre-built models and the ability to upload and execute custom models. This opens up avenues for advanced natural language processing (NLP), clustering, and other machine-learning applications.

Main Concepts

1. Kibana: Kibana serves as a vital component within the Elastic ecosystem, offering a web interface for Elasticsearch. Positioned as the visualization and UI layer of the stack, Kibana empowers users with dashboards, maps, and a monitoring interface, facilitating the overall usability of the stack.

2. Elasticsearch Node: An Elasticsearch node represents an individual instance within the Elasticsearch infrastructure. Each node may fulfill one or more roles, such as data storage, master management, or machine learning capabilities.

2.1 Cluster: A cluster comprises one or more Elasticsearch nodes, with a minimum of three recommended to achieve high availability. Within an Elasticsearch cluster, data, processing, and management are shared, ensuring robustness and high availability.

3. Index: An index serves as a mechanism for organizing documents with similar characteristics within Elasticsearch. Each index has settings and mappings that dictate how data is stored and retrieved.

4. Shard: Shards are subdivisions of an index designed to be distributed on data nodes, thereby facilitating scalability and fault tolerance. Replicas are shards maintained on different nodes to ensure data availability in the event of node failures. Additionally, having replicas facilitate distributed query processing, leading to faster response times.

Basic Architecture for an Elastic Deployment

The simplest architecture ensuring high availability and stability typically consists of three data nodes, each fulfilling both data and master roles. Among these nodes, one is designated as the master node. With this configuration, up to two replicas can be maintained, distributing data across all nodes for redundancy.

Access is facilitated through a dedicated Kibana node, establishing a connection to the Elasticsearch nodes. Via Kibana, users can execute queries, construct visualizations, and manage the cluster, including configuration adjustments within Elasticsearch.

Alternatively, data access can be achieved by sending requests to the RESTful API provided by  Elasticsearch. This approach enables performing tasks similar to those accomplished through Kibana programmatically. A common scenario involves generating a search request based on user input, forwarding it to Elasticsearch, and presenting the results on the frontend.

Going further we can have much more complex architectures, with multiple Kibana nodes, dedicated Coordinating, Master and machine learning Elasticsearch nodes and even with data tiers.

Elasticsearch emerges as an invaluable tool catering to a spectrum of real-time use cases, ranging from its comprehensive full-text search functionality to leveraging machine learning-powered forecasting. Having a robust architecture that ensures high availability and the option to use it as a service, Elasticsearch can be used in production environments with confidence. In my experience, Elasticsearch is a very useful tool that enables a wide range of use cases and adapts very well to any of the client’s needs. It is useful to build search engines, recommendation systems, observability, and security platforms alike.

This reputation also attracts clients and partners who value and appreciate diversity. A good employer reputation can improve employee loyalty and talent retention.

We take pride in having women engineers on our team who not only lead innovative projects but also inspire future generations. From our founder, Forum Desai, to every member of our team, we are committed to empowering women in STEM. We believe in an environment where all voices are heard and valued, and where each individual’s potential is fully developed.

To advance towards a more inclusive and equitable future in engineering, we urge all companies, educational institutions, and governments to take concrete actions:

  • Implement inclusive hiring policies that promote gender diversity.
  • Provide opportunities for professional development and mentorship for women engineers.
  • Foster an organizational culture that values diversity and equal opportunities.
  • Support educational programs that inspire more women to pursue careers in STEM.

These measures are crucial steps towards creating a more diverse, inclusive, and thriving engineering community, where everyone can contribute to and benefit from the advancements in STEM fields.

From Mismo, we applaud all women engineers who continue to make a difference and encourage everyone to join us on the path towards a more diverse and brilliant future in engineering. Happy Day!
