Staying Up to Date as a Software Engineer

As software engineers, there is an overwhelming amount of technologies that we either want to or keep up with. Staying current is not only a competitive advantage but also essential for keeping our resumes relevant. I learned this the hard way.

To address this challenge, I decided to design a structured methodology to effectively stay updated. The approach consists of the following steps:

  1. Gather Information
  2. Filter the Information
  3. Practice What I’ve Learned
  4. Reflect on the Knowledge
  5. Repeat the Process

On top of these five steps, I developed a strategy over the years and have shared it with coworkers and students. The feedback has always been positive. Here’s a detailed look at my approach:

Gathering Information

I like to gather information from diverse sources such as videos, articles, books, news, and newsletters. However, I prefer to consume information asynchronously, on my own schedule. For this, I use an RSS reader, specifically Miniflux. RSS stands for “Really Simple Syndication” and is a way to subscribe to periodically published content, which is perfect for my needs. I decided to manage the information gathering with RSS instead of email so I have everything in one place and avoid notifications. This provides me with a dedicated space for information gathering that is fed periodically and automatically with my topics of interest.

Filtering Information

Not all information is equally valuable. To avoid information overload, I filter the content I gather. This involves skimming through articles, reviewing videos, and checking book reviews before committing time to them. I focus on the sources and topics that are most relevant to my current projects and career goals.

Once a day, for 5-10 minutes, I review unread links and skim those that catch my attention. I use the Eisenhower Matrix to decide on each link. I either:

  • Add it to “starred” on Miniflux or to my Pocket.
  • Delete it.
  • Add it to my today’s TO DO list(a simple markdown file per day).

I usually quickly check the content and decide to add it to my reading list

by bookmarking it with a tag. I use Firefox bookmarks since it is my default browser on my devices. If I decide to read an article later, I will add it to Pocket.

A P2K service automatically sends the content I save in Pocket to my Kindle every Friday, along with the 10 most recent links I’ve saved. This feature is fantastic because it allows me to focus on specific topics depending on the device I’m using.

  •  I may use my phone to quickly review my Pocket list.
  • My laptop if I’m doing some code or POCs.
  • My Kindle if I want to submerge in some reading.

Practicing What I’ve Learned

It’s not enough to just read or watch content; practical application is key. I make it a point to integrate new knowledge into my projects as soon as possible. This might mean implementing a new tool, trying out a new programming language feature, or following a new methodology. I introduced Golang and Typescript to different companies by learning and teaching what I have learned.

Every day, I dedicate 30 minutes to actively learning about specific technologies. This time helps me stay updated with the latest trends in the industry. I might spend this time:

  • Reading an article.
  • Working on a proof of concept (POC), or
  • Reading a chapter of a technical book.

The choice of activity depends on my energy levels and current interest in a topic. I trust the content because it has already been gathered and filtered through a process. Putting this knowledge into practice is crucial. By working on POCs or coding exercises allows me to turn theoretical knowledge into practical skills. This hands-on experience reinforces my learning and helps me understand how to apply new concepts in real-world situations.

Consistently dedicating time to learning and practicing new skills builds on previous sessions, gradually increases my proficiency and depth of understanding. It is compound knowledge.

Reflecting on the Knowledge

Reflection is an often-overlooked step in the learning process. After applying new knowledge, I take the time to think about what worked, what didn’t, and why. This helps solidify the learning and allows me to make changes for future applications. I use my journal for this reflection process.

Repeating the Process

The final step is to repeat the process. Staying updated is an ongoing effort. Technology evolves rapidly, and there is always something new to learn. By consistently applying this method, I ensure I remain current in my field.

Conclusion

Keeping up to date as a software engineer requires a deliberate and structured approach. By gathering information from diverse sources, filtering it, practicing it, reflecting on it, and repeating the process, I stay ahead in my field. This method has been effective for me and has received positive feedback from those I’ve shared it with. I highly recommend trying these tools and methods to see how they work for you.

Leveraging Large Language Models

Even if you’re not closely following the advancements in AI and Large Language Models (LLMs), it’s highly likely that you’ve encountered ChatGPT, —whether in the news or through a friend. Instead of hearing, “Hey, let’s Google that”, you may now hear, “Hey, let’s ask ChatGPT”.

Let’s explore this technology and how it has been rapidly integrating into our daily lives, particularly in the workplace and across various activities within companies of all sizes. We’ll conclude with tips and advice on how to use it responsibly while maintaining realistic expectations. Your own workplace may already be taking initiatives to adopt tools or applications powered by LLMs.

First, let’s define what an LLM is: “It is a subset of Generative AI that refers to artificial intelligence systems capable of understanding and generating human-like language” (Chen, 2024, p.5). These generation capabilities are achieved through training on massive and diverse datasets over extended periods using deep learning — a branch of machine learning.

By leveraging layers of neural networks, which employ probability and other techniques to establish associations within unstructured data (e.g. text, images, videos, audio), LLMs generate the most likely response to a given query. Deep learning enables these models to mimic certain aspects of human cognition, processing vast amounts of information and making decisions in a way loosely analogous to how our brain maps memories, knowledge, and electric signals across billions of neurons.

Building on the concept of unstructured data, these models rely on it as the primary input and output for the services and tools increasingly integrated into our daily tasks. Text serves as the main interface for interacting with LLM applications. For instance, these models can summarize transcripts of virtual meetings, detailing what each participant shared, classifying topics discussed, and even suggesting action items— particularly helpful features for those of us who often forget to take notes.

In a broader, organization-wide use cases, LLMs assist with handling questions and answers by combining search functionalities to process queries efficiently. This often involves training a custom model using techniques like Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), which equips the LLM to retain relevant context from an organization’s internal data. Such models can search through indexed company data in vector databases, delivering more accurate and tailored results.

The capabilities of multi-modal models that LLMs have recently improved, allowing the integration of more complex data and interactions. These models can now follow prompts and instructions at a higher level of programmability, enabling outputs such as customized image or video animations. Chatbots powered by LLMs can also generate highly realistic voice responses, making it increasingly difficult to distinguish between a bot and a real person.

All of this sounds fantastic—revolutionary, disruptive, and incredibly innovative.  The hype surrounding LLMs remains high, fueled by the rapid pace of advancements in model performance, framework availability,  and the emergence of new businesses and technologies. And then there’s the ambitious concept of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), a goal that continues to captivate imaginations, though it carries significant risks and demands cautious exploration.

However, there are important factors to consider when adopting this technology. As end users, we must exercise caution when assigning tasks to any LLMs-powered service or application. One major limitation is the phenomenon of “hallucinations,” where models generate inaccurate or entirely fabricated responses. Even with well-tuned models, results can sometimes be unreliable. Therefore, it’s crucial not to trust these outputs blindly. Much like cross-checking information from multiple sources on Google, we should scrutinize LLM- generated responses and rely on our own domain knowledge and instincts.

To get the best results, turn interactions with LLMs into ongoing conversations rather than relying on one-shot exchanges (known as zero-shot prompts). Providing clear, specific instructions increases the likelihood of achieving accurate and useful outputs.

What Lies Ahead?
As mentioned earlier, the technological landscape around  LLMs is evolving rapidly. Speaking of AGI, while it may be the ultimate aspiration for some, it’s a goal that requires careful and deliberate steps. When leveraging LLMs, we must prioritize quality, security, privacy and dependability in our professional and organizational activities. LLMs are powerful tools, but responsive use is key to unlocking their full potential.

An Introduction to Cloud Services

Software development has undergone a significant transformation over the past few decades, becoming more accessible than ever before. In the early days, web pages and services were created exclusively by professional IT experts working in government agencies or prestigious universities. However, advancements in computing hardware and user-friendly development tools have democratized this process, enabling anyone with an interest in technology to get involved.

One of the most transformative advancements in this field is the rise of cloud services. These services simplify the complexities of managing physical computer hardware, offering a range of remote solutions to users worldwide. From an application standpoint, cloud services allow organizations and individuals to access powerful computing resources, store and analyze data, and deploy applications—all without the need to own or maintain physical servers. This accessibility and scalability have revolutionized the way we build and deliver modern software.

This post provides an easy-to-follow introduction to cloud services, designed for both technical and non-technical readers, highlighting their critical role in modern web architectures.

Before delving into cloud services, let’s revisit the foundational purpose of the web. Although the seamless experience of going online today may obscure this, the internet fundamentally serves to connect devices globally. At its core, the internet consists of numerous computers that either receive information requests and send responses, or initiate these requests and receive corresponding data. Here, the “server” functions as a repository of information—similar to a bank’s system that holds account balances. In contrast, the “client” refers to the device used to access this information, such as a personal computer, laptop, or smartphone (Kurose & Ross, 2017). Understanding these basic concepts can be enlightening, especially when considering terms like “The Cloud,” “Game Servers,” and “Netflix Servers,” which refer to these interconnected computers distributed worldwide.

Now that we have a basic understanding of the web’s structure, let’s explore how to deploy a webpage or web application. Hosting it from your own computer might seem like a viable option, but it presents significant challenges. Imagine launching your project and having your device handle incoming requests. Do you have enough storage to manage all your users’ data? If your project gains popularity, can your computer’s processing power handle the increased traffic? Moreover, your device would need to stay on 24/7—what happens during a power outage? In short, while it’s technically possible, using your personal computer to host a web service is far from ideal. This is where cloud services come in.

Rather than purchasing your own server, it is more practical to rent one with the specifications you need. This approach allows you to avoid dealing with hardware maintenance, upgrades, or replacements later. Cloud services essentially provide this by renting machines to run your code or perform specific software tasks (Kurose & Ross, 2017). Cloud providers simplify this process by abstracting away complex tasks and offering straightforward controls.

It’s important to note that while you can rent an entire computer to run your software, cloud providers typically rent you a “piece” of a computer remotely. This practice, known as virtualization, uses sophisticated software that enables a single physical machine to host multiple virtual instances of operating systems. Each instance operates independently, with the provider dynamically allocating the required storage, processing power, memory, and other resources to meet user needs.

This approach maximizes hardware efficiency by allowing multiple users to share the same physical machine without interfering with one another’s workloads. For example, a single server might run a lightweight web application for one user while simultaneously hosting a resource-intensive database for another. By dividing and managing resources in this way, cloud providers can offer flexible, scalable solutions that adapt to varying demands, all while remaining cost-effective.

Another advantage of cloud services is the wide range of server types optimized for different tasks. This flexibility enables you to modularize your project, assigning each component to a server type that ensures optimal performance and seamless integration. For example, one type of server might handle database queries, while another runs machine learning models, optimizing performance for each workload.

Let’s explore Amazon Web Services (AWS), one of the most popular cloud platforms. AWS holds the largest share of the global cloud infrastructure market and provides a comprehensive suite of tools for various use cases. However, other major providers such as Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) also offer robust solutions, allowing you to select the best fit for your needs.

The basic AWS instance is called EC2 (Elastic Cloud Computing). This service lets you rent a remote machine with the specifications you need to run any code you wish. It’s similar to using your personal computer, especially if you choose a Windows operating system (Amazon Web Services, n.d.).

If you’ve worked with databases, you’re familiar with setting up and connecting to them without needing to manage their files or run additional software. AWS offers RDS (Relational Database Service) to simplify this process. RDS lets you easily mount a database with the details you provide, optimizing it for fast data reading and writing (Amazon Web Services, n.d.).

For large files or high volumes of data, traditional databases may struggle, particularly with image storage. For these cases, Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service) provides an efficient solution. S3 functions similarly to your computer’s file explorer, organizing files into folders for easy retrieval. It is designed to store a variety of file types, including images, PDFs, text files, and even large media files like videos and backups.

One of S3’s key advantages is its scalability and durability. Unlike traditional databases, which can be burdened by managing unstructured data, S3 ensures reliable storage and easy access. It’s particularly useful for projects requiring significant file storage. Integration with other AWS tools further enhances its versatility, making it easier to process and deliver data for applications.

To summarize, you could run your project on an EC2 instance with just enough power to meet your needs, store user data in an RDS database, and store images in an S3 bucket. This setup ensures smooth, efficient operation.

This overview of the cloud is relatively simple, but it hopefully helps demystify the concept. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed by the technicalities and the abundance of available services—AWS alone offers over 200. However, most people don’t need to know all of them. The key is to research and select the services that best fit your needs. Be adventurous and curious—explore forums or ask AI for advice. With so many options available, you’ll have your app up and running in no time.

Remote Job Opportunities in Costa Rica Despite the Decline of Telecommuting

San José, Costa Rica, November 2024. Over the past four years, telecommuting has experienced a significant decline in Costa Rica, according to recent data from the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC). This trend reflects a 40% drop in the number of workers performing their tasks from home, as more companies have decided to return to in-person models. The reasons range from the belief that collaboration improves in an office environment to the perception that teams are more productive when working face-to-face.

This return to physical spaces has had a direct impact on the economy and the dynamics of the labor market. Employees, for example, must once again face daily commutes, resulting in less time for personal and family activities. On the other hand, companies have seen an increase in operating costs due to the need to maintain physical workspaces. However, despite this downward trend, some multinational companies continue to bet on telecommuting as a viable and effective way to ensure both the well-being of their employees and business success.

Supporting Telecommuting

In a context where many organizations are returning to the office, some still defend the remote model as a successful formula. Such is the case of Mismo, a renowned tech company that has positioned itself as a bridge between Latin American talent and the global market. Since its inception, it has facilitated opportunities for technology professionals to work with major international companies without the need to leave their homes or countries of origin.

Thanks to this philosophy, there are currently openings available for developers, engineers, and other tech experts interested in taking on challenging international roles. The remote positions available are diverse and require highly qualified profiles. To apply, candidates must have at least a B2 level of English, as well as soft skills in remote collaboration and teamwork. Some of the available job opportunities include:

  • FullStack UI Developer: This key position requires a professional capable of developing efficient user interfaces (front-end) as well as business logic (back-end), ensuring scalable and dynamic solutions.
  • Data QA Engineer: The person in this role ensures the quality and accuracy of data, which is essential for decision-making in companies that rely on information analysis.
  • Azure Data Engineer: This profile focuses on managing and structuring data in cloud platforms, particularly in Azure, ensuring accessibility and efficiency of information.
  • ETL Data Engineer: Those in this role work on data extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) processes, which are essential for handling large volumes of information.
  • QA Engineer: This role is crucial for ensuring the quality and integrity of systems, helping organizations operate accurately and efficiently.
  • DevOps Engineer: A key position for automating processes, managing infrastructure, and monitoring system performance, ensuring that software development and operation are continuous, and maintaining application stability.

According to Diego Gamboa, CTO of Mismo, “Beyond technical expertise, what truly makes a difference in our team is the ability to collaborate efficiently in a remote environment. We deeply value teamwork, where each member takes responsibility for their role while maintaining a high level of commitment. In an environment where physical distance is a factor, clear and constant communication becomes indispensable, as well as the proactivity to anticipate problems and the sense of urgency to resolve them. It is crucial that our collaborators not only execute tasks but also take the initiative, anticipate needs, and take control of challenges with a determined focus on excellence. This approach to individual responsibility and collaboration is what enables us to achieve exceptional results, even while working from different parts of the world.”

These types of roles not only offer the possibility of working from home but also allow professionals to be at the forefront of technology, collaborate on global projects, and improve their skills along the way. Additionally, as Gamboa points out, “In our organization, we seek not only talent but also the commitment and adaptability that remote work requires. Those who excel in these aspects find unlimited personal and professional growth opportunities.”

Advantages of Remote Work

  • Tell us a little about yourself: Hello! I am a devoted husband and proud father of two young daughters. With over 10 years of experience as a software engineer, I bring dedication and passion to my work. In my free time, I enjoy playing soccer, cycling, and engaging in a variety of outdoor activities.
  • What initially attracted you to engineering and how have you found inspiration in this career? My interest in engineering began as a teenager, sparked by my love for computer games like Age of Empires—an incredible game! I was also skilled with computers at the time, so when it came to choosing a university major, I knew I wanted to pursue something related to technology. This led me to Software Engineering. I stay inspired by following influential frontend developers on social media and attending conferences. These experts share valuable insights into new trends and cutting-edge technologies, keeping me engaged and excited about the field.
  • What innovation or technical advancement have you been a part of that you consider to have made a milestone in your engineering field? I’ve worked on projects involving large monolithic applications built on legacy code, where modernizing these systems while maintaining value for customers posed a significant challenge. I’m proud to have contributed to initiatives that successfully transformed these monoliths into microservices. I also led the implementation of micro frontends using React and modern frameworks like Next.js for these legacy applications. This innovation brought value in two key areas: delivering faster, more responsive applications for customers and creating a more efficient development experience for the engineering team.
  • What made you choose Mismo? A close friend introduced me to Mismo, and for years, I hoped to join because I knew they worked with top developers. I was certain it would be an incredible learning opportunity—and it truly has been since I joined. Mismo is a company filled with exceptionally skilled developers who bring not only technical expertise but also a remarkable human touch.
  • How would you describe the work environment at Mismo? The work environment at Mismo feels like a family. Since I joined, I’ve discovered a second family here, and it’s a wonderful experience to collaborate with people I consider friends. As I mentioned earlier, they are also highly skilled engineers. From the management and human resources departments to the entire engineering team, after eight years with the company, I am confident that I made the right choice in joining Mismo.
  • What learning and development opportunities have you had at Mismo and how have you utilized these opportunities to grow as a professional? At Mismo, I have had numerous learning and development opportunities that have greatly contributed to my growth. From leading innovative software projects to taking on a managerial role, I have significantly advanced as a professional.
  • What aspects of working at Mismo’s engineering team make you proud and motivate you in your daily tasks? Team collaboration has been crucial to our success. No matter how challenging a task may be, I know that at Mismo, I can always find the support I need to achieve it.
  • How do you believe the company and engineering can positively impact the world, people’s lives, and make a difference in their respective industries? I believe that software has the power to make people’s lives easier. By developing useful, impactful, and user-friendly applications, we enable individuals to save time, launch new businesses, create jobs, and spend more quality time with their loved ones.
  • What Mismo policies or practices have helped you improve your work-life balance? The flexible schedule at Mismo has greatly enhanced my work-life balance, allowing me to spend quality time with my family while also prioritizing my own well-being.
  • What inspiring advice would you give to someone considering a career in engineering or looking to join a company like Mismo? In the software development field, there are numerous paths you can pursue: DevOps, full-stack, back-end, front-end, UI/UX, data analysis, and more. It’s important to choose the area you enjoy most and commit to becoming the best in that field. Continuous learning and passion are essential for achieving success in your career.
  • What tools or technologies do you use most frequently in your daily work as an engineer at Mismo? I utilize tools and technologies such as Slack, Jira, Confluence, Visual Studio Code, Docker, React, PHP, Java Spring Boot, and GitHub Copilot.

Introduction to Webpack: Unraveling the Dynamics of a Vital Development Tool

The programming realm stands out as a highly dynamic sector in today’s market, presenting numerous challenges for professionals within this field. This is largely attributed to the constant emergence of new tools, among which webpack holds a prominent position. But what exactly is Webpack?

To illuminate this subject, we’ve curated an article filled with valuable insights. Within these pages, you’ll discover Webpack’s definition, purpose, reasoning behind its adoption, fundamental concepts, advantages, drawbacks, and beyond. Immerse yourself in this content and embark on a comprehensive journey through the intricacies of Webpack. Enjoy your reading!

What is Webpack, and how it works?

Webpack functions as a module and code bundler, simplifying the management of JavaScript files for web browser use. Its primary focus is on web projects structured around application modules.

By employing Webpack,  you gain the ability to precisely define each module, facilitating the creation of graphical representations that clearly illustrate their dependencies. This approach enables the meticulous segmenting of code into coherent “bundles.” For instance, envision a scenario where your web application encompasses a variety of functions. To enhance organization and streamline development, you decide to distribute these functions across separate files. Consequently, when Webpack is utilized, it consolidates all code fragments into comprehensive bundles.

This consolidation offers numerous advantages. Firstly, it eliminates dependency issues when linking HTML files. Moreover, it notably accelerates the loading process for end-users. Gone are the days of waiting for multiple files to load sequentially; instead, users enjoy a seamless loading experience, as all code is encapsulated within a single bundle.

Webpack boasts a wide range of plugins and configurations, offering developers ample options to customize their bundling process. This versatility enables developers to adjust the process to meet their specific needs, whether it entails minimizing bundle size or automating repetitive tasks. Moreover, the active developer community surrounding Webpack provides abundant resources and assistance, facilitating the resolution of common challenges and offering support for more complex issues.

Webpack is compatible with many popular development tools, including React, Angular, and Vue, making it a preferred option for JavaScript module bundling. Additionally, its compatibility with various build systems enables seamless integration into a wide array of development workflows.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Webpack emerges as a crucial tool for web developers striving to streamline the bundling process of JavaScript modules. With its advanced features and compatibility with popular tools, Webpack stands as a reliable choice for teams aiming to elevate the efficiency and quality of their development efforts.

Stay tuned for future content on Vite! Recently, we transitioned from Webpack to Vite at one of our clients, and we’ll be sharing insights and experiences in the upcoming texts. Keep an eye out for more updates!

5 Key Steps to Successfully Apply for Remote Jobs from Home

San José (Costa Rica), October 2024. In today’s era of digital transformation, remote jobs have become a preferred option for many professionals seeking greater flexibility without leaving home. Working from the comfort of home offers numerous benefits, such as saving time and transportation costs, the ability to better balance work and personal life, and a personalized environment that can boost productivity. Additionally, the ability to work in a distraction-free setting and adapt to flexible schedules can be extremely appealing. However, with the growth of this trend, competition for these roles has also increased.

To stand out in the application process and secure a successful remote position, it is crucial to adopt a strategic approach and demonstrate key skills. Autonomy, time management, effective communication, and resilience are essential. The ability to work independently, collaborate virtually, and adapt to change is vital in a remote environment. Similarly, skills like organization and problem-solving are fundamental to succeeding in remote work.

Each of the following steps is designed to address essential aspects of the application process, from crafting an effective resume to preparing for virtual interviews. Implementing these strategies will allow candidates to present a strong application tailored to employers’ expectations in the remote work arena. As Fabiana Salinas, Director of Human Resources at Mismo, points out, “Success in the online work environment requires not only technical skills but also meticulous preparation and a deep understanding of virtual dynamics. Proper preparation is key to standing out and securing the desired opportunity.”

  • Tailor your resume to the needs of remote work: The resume should be directly aligned with the remote role you are applying for. Use terms and keywords that reflect the job’s requirements and ensure that the resume is clear and concise.
  • Highlight soft skills and English proficiency in the selection process: To stand out in the selection process for remote work, it’s essential to demonstrate key soft skills such as adaptability, teamwork, and self-motivation, as well as a minimum English level of B2. Emphasizing these competencies during interviews and interactions with employers is crucial to showcasing the qualities needed to thrive in a virtual environment. “In a world where technology is advancing rapidly and work models are evolving at an accelerated pace, these skills enable professionals not only to integrate smoothly into global and multidisciplinary teams but also to face and overcome the challenges that arise in a constantly changing virtual work environment,” Salinas highlights.
  • Create a professional online presence: For those seeking roles in technology, such as web developers or software engineers, a strong online presence is essential. It’s crucial to ensure that your LinkedIn profile is complete and up to date, reflecting relevant technical experience and knowledge. Additionally, maintaining an updated online portfolio, including a GitHub profile with project and code samples, can be highly beneficial. These elements allow candidates to effectively showcase their projects and achievements, helping them stand out in the competitive tech field.
  • Familiarize yourself with remote team management tools: Understanding the digital tools used in remote work is crucial. It’s essential to learn how to manage collaboration and project management platforms commonly employed in remote work environments. This familiarity will not only help in the application process but also be of great use in daily work once the position is secured.
  • Prepare for the virtual interview with attention to detail: The virtual interview is an opportunity to demonstrate the ability to work in a remote environment. It is essential to have the proper equipment, a stable internet connection, and a quiet space to conduct the interview. Additionally, it’s important to be prepared to discuss remote work skills and how to tackle the challenges associated while working from home.

Applying for remote jobs can present challenges, but with strategic preparation and by following these five key steps, you can significantly increase your chances of success and find the ideal position.
