    As I progressed in my career, I found inspiration in the impact technology can have on everyday life. Building tools that improve processes, save time, or simplify complex tasks is incredibly rewarding. I especially enjoy working on products where performance, scalability, and user experience truly matter.
    I’m also inspired by collaboration. Working with talented people from different disciplines challenges me to think differently and continuously improve my skills. The constant evolution of technology keeps the field exciting and motivates me to keep learning. For me, engineering is not just about writing code—it’s about solving meaningful problems and creating solutions that make a real difference.
  • What innovation or technical advancement have you been a part of that you consider to have made a milestone in your engineering field? One milestone I’m especially proud of was contributing to the development and modernization of a complex task management and assignment platform used to coordinate large-scale field operations.
    The system initially faced performance bottlenecks, limited scalability, and inefficient workflows that impacted daily operations. I played a key role in redesigning critical parts of the frontend architecture, improving state management, optimizing data flows between the client and backend services, and enhancing the overall user experience.
    One of the most impactful improvements was restructuring how large datasets were processed and visualized. This significantly reduced load times and made task planning more efficient for operators. These changes helped the platform scale more reliably and improved operational efficiency for teams using it every day.
    Being part of this transformation showed me how thoughtful engineering decisions can directly influence business performance and user productivity. It reinforced my interest in building scalable systems that solve real operational challenges.

In my daily work, I primarily use modern frontend technologies such as React and TypeScript to build scalable, maintainable user interfaces, along with state management solutions to handle complex data flows.
    I also rely on tools like Git for version control and collaborative development, as well as platforms such as Jira and Confluence for task management, documentation, and team coordination.
    For API integration and testing, I use tools like Postman and browser developer tools to debug and optimize data exchanges between frontend and backend services.
    Additionally, I work in agile environments, following continuous integration workflows, code reviews, and collaborative development practices to ensure high-quality, reliable software delivery.

Meet: Marjorie Valverde

Software Engineer / Engineering Lead

Country: Costa Rica

I was born in Cartago, Costa Rica, and grew up in the beautiful Zona de los Santos region, specifically in Tarrazú. I earned my bachelor’s degree from the Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica.
Outside of work, I enjoy practicing taekwondo and have recently developed an interest in weightlifting. I’m working on building a consistent gym routine and loving the feeling of getting stronger. I got married in 2024 and now live in Budapest, Hungary, with my husband and our two cats.
I’m passionate about live music and try to attend concerts whenever possible. I’m also an avid Formula 1 fan and rarely miss a race weekend!

What initially attracted you to engineering and how have you found inspiration in this career?
I didn’t have much exposure to coding or software development before university, but I’ve always been passionate about solving problems and understanding how systems work. Once I began studying engineering, I quickly realized how much I enjoyed the challenge and creativity involved in building solutions from the ground up.
What inspires me most is collaborating with other engineers—taking an idea from concept through design, architecture, and development, and ultimately seeing it come to life in the hands of users.
Beyond my technical passion, this career has also given me the opportunity to support my family and pursue personal dreams. It’s incredibly fulfilling to do work I love while creating a better future for myself and my loved ones.

What innovation or technical advancement have you been a part of that you consider to have made a milestone in your engineering field?

One of the most meaningful aspects of my journey has been the ongoing opportunity to learn and grow—from applying what I learned in university to collaborating with experienced staff engineers and gaining valuable insights from their expertise every day.
I’ve had the chance to work with startups and witness their evolution over the years, which has given me a deep appreciation for scalability, adaptability, and the vital role engineering plays in driving growth.
Collaborating closely with product and design teams to bring new features to life has also been incredibly rewarding. A particular highlight has been working with a client in the mental health space—knowing that the features I help build directly support people as they navigate challenges and improve their well-being is something I’m especially proud of.
These experiences remind me that engineering isn’t just about writing code—it’s about creating real value and making a meaningful impact through technology.

What made you choose Mismo?

At Mismo, I’ve had the opportunity to take ownership of large projects—from defining technical requirements and shaping the design, to development, testing, and final release. Being trusted with that level of responsibility has helped me grow not only as an engineer but also as a problem-solver and decision-maker.
Working with a variety of clients, each with their own workflows and organizational styles, has pushed me to adapt quickly and keep learning. At the same time, it has allowed me to contribute fresh ideas—whether by proposing more efficient processes or helping build systems that are scalable and maintainable.
These experiences have strengthened both my technical and communication skills and given me a broader perspective on how to approach challenges in different environments.

What is your personal vision of a future where gender equity is a reality in all organizations, including Mismo?

True gender equity in engineering is still a work in progress, and while I wouldn’t say we’re close to that ideal just yet, I remain hopeful. One of the biggest challenges is that equity doesn’t begin in the workplace—it starts much earlier, with how society encourages (or discourages) girls and young women to pursue careers in STEM.
At Mismo, I’ve personally experienced a sense of equity—women are treated with the same respect and given the same opportunities as men. However, when looking at the numbers, we’re still far from achieving a 50/50 balance, which reflects a broader issue across the industry.
My vision is a future where more women feel confident pursuing engineering, supported by both societal change and inclusive work environments. Organizations like Mismo can play a key role by continuing to create spaces where women can thrive and by actively supporting initiatives that bring more women into the field.

What aspects of working at Mismo’s engineering team make you proud and motivate you in your daily tasks?

One of the things I’m most proud of is the opportunity to support and mentor other engineers through my role as a team lead. Being able to guide both women and men as they begin or advance in their careers is incredibly rewarding.

It’s deeply motivating to know that I can help others build confidence, develop their skills, and feel supported as they navigate their own paths in tech.

I believe companies and engineering teams can make a real difference by choosing to work with clients and projects that have a positive social impact—such as those focused on accessible mental health support, education, or community development. With a background in Psychology and several years of experience in Technical Recruitment, I’ve always been passionate about understanding people and connecting them with the right opportunities. What initially drew me to my current role at Mismo was the chance to work on highly specialized, niche positions for U.S.-based clients. I found it exciting to be part of building teams and to be fully engaged throughout the hiring process. What inspires me most is the high level of collaboration we have with our clients. We take the time to deeply understand their business and specific needs, which allows us to make thoughtful, impactful hires together. It’s incredibly rewarding to go beyond the surface and play a meaningful role in helping their teams grow.

What innovation or achievement have you participated in that you consider to be a milestone in your professional career?
A few years ago, I had the opportunity to be part of the recruitment process for a startup focused on SaaS solutions, chatbots, and AI. It’s one of those projects I truly cherish—it had a profound impact on me both personally and professionally.   • What initially attracted you to engineering and how have you found inspiration in this career? Since I was a kid, I’ve enjoyed building things. Back in college, I became very interested in how certain technologies work. That curiosity—combined with my love for solving complex problems and the ability to build solutions and applications—led me to dive deeper into software engineering. There’s always something new to learn, which keeps it exciting. Plus, having the opportunity to collaborate in industries that make a positive impact on people’s lives is a big part of what inspires me.
  • What innovation or technical advancement have you been a part of that you consider to have made a milestone in your engineering field? I consider it a milestone to be part of a healthcare organization with highly skilled and knowledgeable teammates. Learning new technologies and better ways to build applications in such a collaborative environment—while also gaining a deeper understanding of the clinical domain—is incredibly fulfilling. It allows me to contribute to improving the care experience for both patients and healthcare providers.

I hadn’t originally planned to become an engineer, but during my final years of high school, the option of majoring in Computer Science emerged. I applied, passed the admission exam, and decided to enroll—mainly for fun. In the end, it helped me gain a deeper understanding of what it meant to be a computer science professional, and from that moment on, I was determined to pursue this path in college.
  • What innovation or technical advancement have you been a part of that you consider to have made a milestone in your engineering field? I firmly believe that our current client has grown into a solid company largely due to the contributions of our engineering team.

  • What innovation or technical advancement have you been a part of that you consider to have made a milestone in your engineering field?  During the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, I developed a contact tracing system that utilized cell phone tower logs to track potential virus exposure. This project involved integrating a range of technologies, including data cleaning, data modeling, geospatial analysis, and real-time alerting systems.

At that moment, I was so eager to take it apart, clean it, and then put it back together that it left a lasting impression on me. From that day on, I knew I wanted to study computers.

I like to set milestones for every goal I pursue, regardless of its complexity. In other words, even the smallest achievement feels like a milestone to me. For example, using cutting-edge technology can be considered a milestone, as it means being among a select group of people worldwide utilizing that innovation. The fact that you’re using it to solve someone’s problem makes it even more remarkable.

These experts share valuable insights into new trends and cutting-edge technologies, keeping me engaged and excited about the field.
  • What innovation or technical advancement have you been a part of that you consider to have made a milestone in your engineering field? I’ve worked on projects involving large monolithic applications built on legacy code, where modernizing these systems while maintaining value for customers posed a significant challenge. I’m proud to have contributed to initiatives that successfully transformed these monoliths into microservices. I also led the implementation of micro frontends using React and modern frameworks like Next.js for these legacy applications.
