  • Tell us a little about yourself: I am a passionate Full-Stack Engineer from San Carlos, Costa Rica. I grew up in an extremely rural area without access to essential services and technologies such as electricity, television, telephone, or transportation. However, through hard work and dedication, I graduated from Tecnológico de Costa Rica in 2009. Since then, I have continued to grow professionally, largely thanks to the incredible family that is Mismo. I am happily married and the proud father of a beautiful daughter.
  • What initially attracted you to engineering and how have you found inspiration in this career? I hadn’t originally planned to become an engineer, but during my final years of high school, the option of majoring in Computer Science emerged. I applied, passed the admission exam, and decided to enroll—mainly for fun. In the end, it helped me gain a deeper understanding of what it meant to be a computer science professional, and from that moment on, I was determined to pursue this path in college.
  • What innovation or technical advancement have you been a part of that you consider to have made a milestone in your engineering field? I firmly believe that our current client has grown into a solid company largely due to the contributions of our engineering team.
  • What made you choose Mismo? I initially worked at Mismo as a contractor, which allowed me to experience its excellent work environment and professional culture. Two years later, when the opportunity to officially join the Mismo family arose, I knew it would be my home for years to come.
  • How would you describe the work environment at Mismo? Mismo is always focused on improvement in all areas, with one of the most important being ensuring a healthy and pleasant work environment.
  • What learning and development opportunities have you had at Mismo and how have you utilized these opportunities to grow as a professional? Mismo has provided me with all the necessary tools to grow professionally, and I have made the most of them. As a result, I have developed a wide range of technical skills that enable me to make a positive impact on the engineering team. Additionally, Mismo gave me the opportunity to take on a leadership role, which has significantly helped me strengthen my soft skills.

  • What tools or technologies do you use most frequently in your daily work as an engineer at Mismo? Our team is responsible for several services and applications, so our daily work involves a variety of tools and technologies, including programming languages such as Java, PHP 5-7, Go, Scala, Ruby, and Python. For frontend development, we use React, Next.js, and Angular. Our databases include MySQL, PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server, ElasticSearch, MongoDB, Cassandra, Redis, and ETCD. We work with message queue platforms like Apache Kafka, RabbitMQ, and Debezium. Additionally, we use tools like ChaosSearch, Rollbar, Datadog, AWS, EKS, and Apache Spark. Our 3rd party integrations include Auth0, SendGrid, SendWithUs, Semantria, and ReviewSites.

  • What initially attracted you to engineering and how have you found inspiration in this career? As a child, my love for video games ignited a deep curiosity about how things work, which naturally led me to a career in engineering. During high school, I began learning programming and quickly discovered my true passion. I’ve always been captivated by how technology can solve complex challenges and create impactful, innovative solutions. This drive to help others and make meaningful improvements continues to inspire and fuel my engineering career.
  • What innovation or technical advancement have you been a part of that you consider to have made a milestone in your engineering field? Working in startups has empowered me to make a substantial impact and drive critical innovations. A standout achievement in my career was developing a billing system for a startup, which transformed the entire billing process. By streamlining operations, this system significantly increased efficiency and speed for the finance team, showcasing my ability to deliver impactful solutions in fast-paced environments.

  • Tell us a little about yourself: I’m a software engineer from Costa Rica who loves video games and rating movies on letterboxd.
  • What initially attracted you to engineering and how have you found inspiration in this career? I have always loved challenges and solving problems and that’s a big part of being a software engineer. I found inspiring starting a new day ready to tackle problems and open to new learning opportunities.
  • What innovation or technical advancement have you been a part of that you consider to have made a milestone in your engineering field? At Mismo we work really closely with startups, which enhances and values creativity and innovation because they are keys to develop unique products and services and we are able to see the impact that our work can provide.
  • What made you choose Mismo? I had the opportunity to know about Mismo in the process of starting an internship and I found their values and culture able to tone with mine. Since day one I have been really happy and sure it was a great decision.
  • How would you describe the work environment at Mismo? We are like a family, the remote culture isn’t a limitation because Mismo ensures we share and help each other, which at the same time is a reflection of Mismo’s values and ours as collaborators.
  • What learning and development opportunities have you had at Mismo and how have you utilized these opportunities to grow as a professional? There are many opportunities such as learning platforms, resources and a personalized career path. At Mismo they are aware that each collaborator has a different background and milestones to achieve.
  • What is your personal vision of a future where gender equity is a reality in all organizations, including Mismo?  Women have access to the same opportunities as men and we also change our mindset as a society.
  • What aspects of working at Mismo’s engineering team make you proud and motivate you in your daily tasks? Fellowship, empathy and all of us are always open to help and learn from each other, so we can grow up as a team and individuals.
  • How do you believe the company and engineering can positively impact the world, people’s lives, and make a difference in their respective industries? As I mentioned before, software engineering has taken a place in plenty of industries and people’s lives, software is a tool that can help people and become a solution to different challenges.
  • What Mismo policies or practices have helped you improve your work-life balance? Thanks to Mismo policies, I’m able to work remote and flexible hours, so I can balance personal and work life.
  • What inspiring advice would you give to someone considering a career in engineering or looking to join a company like Mismo? Give it a try, It’s a wonderful company full of opportunities that can enrich their professional path.
  • What tools or technologies do you use most frequently in your daily work as an engineer at Mismo? I mostly use Ruby on Rails, React and GraphQL which are fundamental for the projects and features I work on a daily basis.

Case Study: Revinate – Development of a Hotel Guest Platform

In 2015, Revinate partnered with Mismo to recruit, onboard and nurture a Latina America-based team of software developers that could meet Revinate’s needs. Revinate’s Mismo team continues to develop and improve on a state of the art hotel guest platform for hoteliers that includes CRM and reputation management modules. The platform allows hoteliers to gain deeper insights into their guests, market to them at optimal times, get real feedback, track their online reputation, and build robust and meaningful reporting.

“With Mismo, we have been able to quickly scale our engineering teams with highly skilled developers that know how to deliver products,” said Jason Standiford, CTO for Revinate. “We can make product updates faster and more cost-effectively with our team in Latin America. They really are an extension of Revinate and a long-term part of our product road map.”

 

About Revinate

Revinate is headquartered in San Francisco, with additional locations in Amsterdam and Singapore. The company chose Mismo because it is a full-service platform with expertise in recruiting, onboarding and nurturing engineering talent in the Latin American market. Mismo’s founders and teams have a deep understanding of the challenges tech companies face, and what it takes to succeed in the Bay Area startup scene and global markets everywhere.

Revinate’s biggest challenge before working with Mismo was speed to market. The company had a solid product road map and could see market opportunities that fit with its core capabilities and wanted to expand its product suite at a much faster pace to take advantage of those opportunities. With a need for developers in a convenient time zone to speed up the product road map, the Revinate team interviewed candidates and quickly hired three Mismo team members. The onboarding process was fast, with the Mismo team fully up to speed on Revinate’s platform, tech stack and development cycles in less than 6 weeks.

Technology and Capabilities

Mismo had the talent pool to meet Revinate’s needs. As with all clients, Mismo handled recruiting, hiring and onboarding — arranging all interviews and coordinating the hiring and onboarding processes. Coordinating in-person travel as needed is also a specialty of Mismo’s and helped kickstart Revinate’s team so they could start producing fast.

At first, Revinate’s Mismo team was tasked with expanding and improving their reputation management module and building a tool that helps hoteliers compare their hotel ratings to other, similar hotel’s ratings across multiple sites. Improvements were made quickly, adding efficient features for complex surveys, in-depth reporting and flexible solutions to enable hoteliers to better understand their customers.

With the product road map for the reputation management module back on track, Revinate and its Mismo team shifted its focus to expand the CRM module. The teams improved segmentation capabilities, generated robust customer insights and targeting features.

Today, Revinate and Mismo’s focus has expanded to further improve the architecture of the platform. Modernizing the tech stack to achieve better security, improved scalability and sustainability to reach the goals of the organization. Revinate’s Mismo team is enhancing the platform while improving the underlying architecture and the process of development.

Originally, Revinate’s platform was originally built on PHP & JQuery. The Mismo team is migrating the platform to React, Java and Apache Kafka, breaking the monolith into microservices. Using microservice architecture allows companies to improve fault isolation on their platforms, have a better understanding of their platforms, deploy new features more efficiently and develop greater platform scalability.

Processes

Revinate’s business goals are what drives its Mismo team. The teams grow together, improve each other and continue to accomplish goals as one cohesive unit.

Revinate’s Mismo team meets with Revinate’s product owner, director of engineering, team leads and development team every week — sometimes multiple times a week. These meetings keep everyone on the same page and ensure accountability. Revinate’s Mismo team has gone to San Francisco several times to meet team members in person, and developers and leads from Revinate have gone to Costa Rica to work with the Mismo team directly for periods of time. They know each other, and they trust each other.
